1XV v Painswick (Away) 13 Dec 2003

38-12 Win

On the very weekend when the victorious English side were receiving yet further TV accolades, Monmouth did their bit by visiting Painswick in Gloucester and returning comfortable 38-12 winners.

Having been frustrated yet again in rearranging the outstanding Chepstow replay, Monmouth took a weakened side away for a friendly in the Gloucestershire ‘pool’ because even ‘macho’ rugby players sometimes get injured or have to conform and go Christmas shopping.

Druids v Llandaff (Home) 06 Dec 2003

11-8 Win

1XV v Caldicot (Home) 06 Dec 2003

52-6 Win

Caldicot have not visited Monmouth for a good few years and after a 52-6 drubbing with eight tries scored against them, they are probably wondering whether it was worth the short journey.

On a cold but dry day, and after committee members had spent a full 45 minutes clearing the pitch of bottles smashed there during the week by the town’s mindless vandals, battle commenced and Monmouth soon found themselves on the wrong side of the referee’s interpretations of the laws. After only five minutes Caldicot went into a three point lead from a penalty.

Druids v Cinderford (Home) 29 Nov 2003

45-5 Win

1XV v Blaina (Away) 22 Nov 2003

13-29 Loss

If rugby were a game played over forty minutes, Monmouth would have been pleased with the way they disposed of the favourites away at Blaina last Saturday, by scoring ten points to nil by way of reply.

Monmouth’s game had been improving in recent weeks, lifting them to fourth place in the table giving them reason to expect at least to match opponents who had lost only one game this season.

Druids v Crickhowell (Away) 22 Nov 2003

10-31 Loss

1XV v Crumlin (Home) 15 Nov 2003

43-8 Win

The 43-8 home win over visitors Crumlin last Saturday suggests that Monmouth are now coming good after a full third of a season of promising much but achieving little.

But this week in a game of two distinctly different halves, everything clicked in the second half and Monmouth scored 40 points to nil in reply.

Druids v Cwmbran (Away) 15 Nov 2003

7-37 Loss

1XV v Pontllanfraith (Away) 08 Nov 2003

21-0 Win

Monmouth achieved a comfortable win away at Pontllanffraith on Saturday with a try in each half and little serious threat to their own goal-line.

On yet another fine dry day and pitch, Monmouth chose to play against the slope and wind and their defence was good as the home team tried to use the elements to their advantage. Fast and furious though the play sometime was, the boots of Monmouth half-backs kicked accurately and deep to relieve the pressure, whilst their back row and backs tackled reliably.

Druids v Abergavenny (Away) 08 Nov 2003

17-5 Win
