A Good Day For Rugby

Last Saturday always promised a feast of rugby as Wales took on England at Cardiff but the sport itself excelled both from this intense spectacle at an international level where Wales fell just short, but just as important were the games played on the Sports Ground in memory of friend to many and renowned rugby warrior, Will Copley, who passed away just over a year ago at far too young an age.

58-21 Win

Monmouth back to bonus winning ways.

On an unusually greasy Sports Ground pitch due to previous rain, Monmouth needed to show they had recovered their confidence after the drubbing they had received at Caerphilly and this they did in almost complete style.

The first scrum set the scene with Monmouth forcing a penalty and from the ensuing line-out the ball moved across field to the right where 'big Jono', their Kiwi 2nd row, was on hand to dive over for his maiden try for the Club, complet a strong charge for the line by Green, a young prop whose confidence grows with every game.

Sound 13 try beating for Monmouth

After the high of last week when beating New Tredegar 60-5, the tide was truly turned when visiting Caerphilly last Saturday.

It was always going to be a tough call as Caerphilly are having a strong resurgence this season, but to come away defeated 81-7 (or 13 tries to 1) despite significant forced changes to the team gives cause for alarm.

The opening try, run back from a deep kick, with full back Candy evading 6 tackles to score under the posts, may have been due to the Monmouth boys still mentally being on the coach.

Nine Try Bonanza For Monmouth

Having failed to crack Amman Utd. away the week before in Cup rugby, in far better playing conditions at the Sports Ground last Saturday, Monmouth again displayed their improving team-work and confidence to beat visitors, New Tredegar, by nine tries to one and gain a try scoring bonus point at the same time.

Numerous individuals stood out but pre-eminent amongst them was captain and flanker Tom Rees who seemed to be everywhere in defence or attack, assisting unselfishly in the scoring of many tries as well as landing two of his own.

A Tense Finish for Monmouth

In a game that Monmouth dominated territorially against RTB Ebbw Vale last Saturday, tensions still abounded at the very end as Monmouth struggled to break the local defences and their opponents defended valiantly, looking to counter-attack to steal victory whenever they regained control of the ball.

1XV v Usk (home) 26 Dec 2016

27-7 Win

Sweet Revenge for Monmouth

With the still raw memories of last year's drubbing at Usk and with The Druids having lost 11-10 this last Boxing Day morning, Monmouth's 1st XV needed little encouragement before a record crowd of around 1000. And as is there current style they set about their task with vigour beneath clear blue skies, sensibly playing with the bright sun behind their backs before it could become a possible hindrance in the second half.

Tries: D.White (2), S.Parsons

Monmouth Take Table-toppers apart

Table topping Oakdale visited Monmouth full of confidence last Saturday, but Monmouth used their new found confidence and, playing as a team, sent them back to the Valleys with their tails between their legs.

Cup Progress for Monmouth

Murky though the weather was, with increasingly poor visibility due to rain and the steam generated from soaking jerseys, the large crowd at last Saturday's cup match were kept entertained right until the final whistle as Monmouth held on tenaciously to a 12-10 lead to progress to the next stage in the National Bowl competition.

Tries: T.Green, D.White
Conv: P.Emanuelli
