1XV v Bargoed (Away) 08 Sep 2001

11-48 Loss

The report last week of Monmouth RFC's encouraging trial matches looks a little lame in the light of the club's results today. The Druids started very well, with a good win against arch enemies Usk. The final score was 29-7 with the Druids running five tries to one. The 1st XV however, went down heavily, 11-48, whilst away in their first league fixture to a very lively Bargoed.

Playing with the wind, Monmouth found themselves under pressure for the first few scrums, leading to a loss against the head on the 22 yard gain line and the first try for the home team.

Despite another converted try by Bargoed, Monmouth were kept in the game in during the first half hour with two penalties by fly half Dave Croudace, but a six minute patch of very poor tackling saw three more home team tries before turning around 30-6!

Pride and a stern talking to ensured some greater competition immediately after half-time and a good passage of play led to Andrew Davies scoring what was to be Monmouth's only try of the day. Thereafter the defence was again found to be suspect with a procession of three further tries before the referee ended the game so that Monmouth could set about licking their wounds.
