Druids v Pill Harriers (Home) 08 Oct 2011

30-35 Loss

Last gasp victory

Chippenham Mead has seen many thrilling rugby matches over the years but few in which 65 points were scored and the result in doubt until the final whistle blew.

Such was the fixture for Monmouth Druids against league leaders Pill Harriers.
Fielding another much changed side, the Druids were forced to play some newcomers and fill key positions by players who would normally play in other positions. It was the visitors who were first on the scoreboard. Some poor up-front Druids tackling allowed Pill to charge into the home sides 22 metre area and touch down wide out for an unconverted try.

The scrums were also a problem as inexperienced players tried hard to win vital possession. Despite this, Druids Captain Dave Brace kicked a penalty goal to make the score 3-5 to Pill. Full Back Jack Butler put the Druids in the lead with a try near the posts which Brace converted. There was an exchange of penalty goals and at half time the scores were level.

Just after the break the Druids took the lead, when Brace kicked a penalty goal and a Dan Risk try following a Tom Cratchley break. Pill responded with a try of their own which was converted to give make the scores level.

Jack Butler seemed to have won the game for the Druids with his second try but Pill were not yet finished. Missed tackles allowed strong running Pill attackers to burst through the fragile home defence to give a 35 -30 victory.

A disappointment yes, but there was some plus points. Druids man of the match, scrum half Tom Cratchley, second row Andrew Rawsthorne and Dave Brace’ s kicking stood out. Some bulky Pill players were difficult to hold and the visitors had forward momentum to their attacks.
