Druids v NHSOB (Away) 15 Oct 2011

29-19 Win

Druids success in league

Yew Tree Lane, Caerleon has not been a particularly happy hunting ground for Monmouth Druids. The opponents Newport High School Old Boys, were holding a league position well below the visitors but the Druids suffered a defeat in their previous fixture.

From the kick off the Druids backs quickly established superiority and swift handling established good field position. Left wing Herve Deherang was put away but strong cover tackling kept the Newport HSOB line intact. A score was inevitable and what a try it was. Full Back Mattie Morgan made a clean catch from a Newport clearance kick. He weaved his way through some would-be tacklers and gave a pass to Centre Mike Whistance and he used his pace to beat a number of flat footed defenders. He crossed for a fine try behind the posts and fellow Centre Dave Brace converted to give the Druids a 7-0 lead.

The referee was unhappy with the way the Back Row was packing down in the scrums and penalised the Druids on a number of occasions. Joel Price made a surging run up field but lacked support. This was only a temporary relief for Newport as the Druids increased their lead. Dave Brace broke the gain line and Herve Deherang carried the move on for Number Eight Nick Phillips to touch down near the posts. Brace again converted to make the score 14-0.

Newport retaliated and only a last ditch Druids tackle prevented a score. More Newport pressure saw their bulky outside half run beneath the posts which was improved to make the score 14-7. The Druids responded just before half time with their third try. Some crisp passing ended with Dave Brace touching down wide out. This try was not converted. The half ended by a period of indecision in the Druids play.

The restart almost brought about another Druids try. The short kick off was gathered by Dave Brace and he raced through the Newport defence only to be denied just short of the home try line. He was not to be denied however as minutes later Brace touched down following a tap penalty and he converted the try for good measure.

A Yellow Card to a Monmouth player saw Newport up the play and they scored two tries through strong direct running by their big forwards. One of these was converted. Dave Brace kicked a penalty goal make the final score 29-19 in favour of the Druids.

Brace was prominent but he needs to improve his distribution, as was Stuart Boyland and Nick Phillips with their tackling. Moving the ball wide paid dividends for the Druids but the set pieces need working on.
