Druids v Usk (Away) 12 Nov 2011

83-3 Win

Druids hammer Usk

Top of the league Druids visited bottom of the table Usk and put in a performance which fully justified their status. The brave Usk fifteen had no answer to the visitors drive and team play and their decision to start the game with uncontested scrums showed the current shortage of players in the home ranks.

From the kick off the Druids put Usk under continuous pressure and much of the early play was in home 22 metre area forcing them to kick to touch in clearing their lines. A missed penalty goal by Dave Brace and a Scot Mcgowan run held up on the Usk line were only temporary disappointments for the Druids. A long throw to the back of the lineout was collected by Scot Mcgowan and he raced over for the first Druids try which was improved by Captain Dave Brace.

Usk did get on the scoreboard when a Druids prop was penalised and the home side kicked the goal through Rydian Gibbs. The Druids immediately hit back when from broken play, Prop Mat Hurst powered over and a Dave Brace penalty made the score 15-3. A slick handling movement saw Druids Wing Mattie Morgan touch down in the corner and with it the half time whistle.

The restart was much the same as the first period, as Usk found the Druids passing and forceful play, difficult to withstand. A rolling maul ended with Mattie Edwards flopping over and Dave Brace converting. An attacking scrum was the start of the next Druids try. Outside Half Aaron Price kicked through cleverly and Centre Gareth Jones dived on the ball to score for an unconverted try.

A well won lineout by the Druids saw Outside Half Aaron Price give Dave Brace a short pass and he in turn raced over for a try which he converted. Then the quickest hat trick of tries by Druids wing Sam Skipp sealed the best away victory the Monmouth club has seen in living memory. Passes from Centres Gareth Jones and Dave Brace saw Skipp stretch his long legs to cross the Usk line on three occasions in less than ten minutes. All the tries were converted by Dave Brace.

The icing on the cake was a last minute try from Hooker Mark ‘Jock’ Jones. He followed up a kick by Dave Brace and was on hand to dive over.Once more Dave Brace converted.

A thumping victory by the Druids, everyone can be pleased with this 83-3 result. For Usk they fulfilled the fixture despite a disappointing season so far.Second Row Mattie Edwards was man of the match in a team that dominated the game.
