Druids v Usk (Home) 26 Dec 2011

63-0 Win

Druids Teamwork wins it

The Sports Ground was the venue for Monmouth Druids traditional, long standing fixture with local rivals USK RFC. This game was eagerly awaited by the Druids, as the Sports Ground is a rare bonus attraction in over a large number of seasons. A large crowd, many from Usk, supported the match together containing a fair sprinkling of festive holiday makers.

Both sides selected large squads, even Usk who are having a difficult season, put up a number of players, who were largely youngsters. The Druids on the other hand fielded a side which was of a mixture of experience and youth. This proved to be an emphatically successful formula.

The kick off signalled Druids dominance with most of the play in the Usk territory but it was the visitors who failed to take the lead with a missed penalty goal. The home side’s general organisation was proving to be very effective and Number Eight Tony Richards opened the afternoons entertainment with two tries. Both resulted from his supporting play in backing up Druids driving play and his own determination. Dave Brace converted one of the tries together with kicking a 25 metre penalty goal.

Scrum Half Matt King forced his way over after a scrum five and Wing Matt Tabb raced over following a break from Centre Mike Whistance, both were unimproved and the half ended with the Druids leading by 27-0.

The game was virtually won but the Druids did not take their foot off the pedal. Hooker Mark Jones was the next on the score sheet when he took the ball on the burst and surged over for another unconverted try. Then the try of the match from Scot Skipp. A sweeping move from deep in their own half with deft handling and perfect timing the ball reached wing Skipp. He used his strength and long legs to force his way and Dave Brace converted to make the score 37-0.

From broken play, Druids Outside Half Arun Price, side stepped past two defenders to squeeze over for the seventh try which Dave Brace converted. Several substitutions from both sides livened up play and Andy Howells and Jack Howells from the Druids were particularly effective. Scot Skipp scored his second try after an audacious flip back pass from one of the forwards. He fended off two defenders to dive over close to the posts. Centre Jordan Howells improved the try.
Yet another substitute, Scrum Half Kyle Price scored a touch down following a break by Jordan Howells. Dave Brace converted to bring the scoring to the end. Nine tries in a 60-0 victory a conclusive result against a gallant Usk side.
