U10 v Usk (Home) 25 Sep 2011

60-5 Win

The Bears first home match of the season saw a great squad turn-out of 18 players to take on local rivals Usk. From the whistle, the Bears picked up from where they left off last week, with Rhys Williams opening the scoring early on. Further tries in the first-half from Roderick Ho, Ben Pilot and a hat-trick from speed merchant Josh Lewis, saw half-time arrive, with the Bears 30-nil up.

Regular substitutions saw all the squad play a great part in the game, but despite the numerous changes in personnel, the Bears’ momentum was not disrupted, with tries from Raphael Kefalas, Henry Watkins and two each from big Will Ruck and Ben Pilot, who completed his hat-trick. The only blot on an otherwise faultless performance was a late consolation try for the thoroughly outplayed visitors.

The Bears open style of running rugby is really beginning to take shape, whilst in defence superb tackling limits opportunities for their opponents. They have racked up 20 tries and conceded only three in their first two matches of the new season.

A special mention should be given to Jonny Snell, who volunteered to play the whole match for the depleted Usk team – he had a great game, tackling his heart out – but for him, the score could have been much worse for the visitors. The “Player of the Week” award was given to Will Ruck back in the club-house, for his superb all-round display.

FINAL SCORE: Monmouth Bears 60 – 5 Usk

Tries: Josh Lewis (3) Ben Pilot (3) Will Ruck (2) Roderick Ho, Henry Watkins, Raphael Kefalas, Rhys Williams.
