Monmouth Tournament

Monmouth Young Rugby Club hosted their annual Festival of Rugby, with teams from far and wide across all age-groups attending. The Bears squad of 16 players faced stiff competition from four teams:

Match 1: vs. St Josephs – The Bears gained superiority very quickly in their opening game, especially with Will Ruck settling any pre-tournament nerves with 2 early trademark tries. Further tries from Ben Pilot, Josh Lewis and Henry Watkins saw them open their day’s account with a comfortable victory, with everyone gaining valuable game time.

Score: Monmouth Bears 25 – 0 St Josephs
Try Scorers: Will Ruck (2) Ben Pilot, Josh Lewis and Henry Watkins

Match 2: vs. Abergavenny – Local bragging rights were at stake and the Bears soon took control of the match, albeit after a rather slow start. Tries from Sam Hughes, Raphael Kefalas Alastair McIntosh and Josh Lewis secured a comfortable win. Strong tackling ensured the Bears’ own try-line remained in tact, typified by one breakaway opportunity for Abergavenny being snuffed out by a last-ditch tackle from a chasing Bears defender.

Score: Monmouth Bears 20 – 0 Abergavenny
Try Scorers: Sam Hughes, Raphael Kefalas, Josh Lewis and Alastair McIntosh

Match 3: vs. Gwernyfed – Last year’s defending champions were next up for the Bears and it was apparent that this was the key game in the group. A fiercely competitive game ensued with bone-crunching tackling and rucking predominant. Chances were few but it was the big boys in green who managed to get their noses in front. The Bears battled away for long periods in their opponents’ half but could not quite make the breakthrough, although Raphael went mighty close. The closest game of the day, decided by one try – a fantastic game of rugby which deserved no loser!

Score: Monmouth 0 – 5 Gwernyfed

Match 4: vs. Tredegar – The final game for the Bears would determine the runners-up spot. Spirits had to be lifted after the disappointment of their last match and what a response the Bears provided – wonderful defence coupled with open running rugby ensured they edged a close game – tries this time from Raphael Kefalas and Josh Lewis.

Score: Monmouth 10 – 5 Tredegar
Try Scorers: Josh Lewis and Raphael Kefalas

Overall, the Bears won 3 out of 4 games, conceded only 2 tries and 11 tries scored, shared amongst 7 players – a great squad effort which saw them end up worthy runners-up to Gwernyfed.
