U10 v Berry Hill (Away) 13 Nov 2011

35-20 Win

Monmouth Bears go on the rampage in the Forest!

Monmouth Bears travelled over the border to take on fierce local rivals Berry Hill, for their first test of the season playing to the vastly different English R.F.U. Pathway. It was a massive challenge for the boys which they comfortably took in their stride – beware of Bears on the loose in the Forest!

A typically robust and fierce clash ensued, with an expectant and confident Berry Hill out of the traps first with an early try. Monmouth quickly hit back with the excellent Alastair McIntosh touching down. Berry Hill kept nudging ahead, but back came the Bears each time with tries from Will Ruck and another from Alastair, his last contribution before succumbing to injury, to see half-time arrive with the scores locked at 15 – 15.

The second-half saw the Bears really take control, matching the physicality at the breakdown, slamming into tackles and somehow creating some space on a very narrow pitch. Josh Lewis put the Bears ahead for the first time in the game; Ieuan Frost, playing a blinder, scored his first ever competitive try and when Roderick Ho went over the whitewash, the game was as good as over, with the score standing at 30 – 15 to the Bears.

Whilst the hosts continually tried to ram-raid their way through the Bears’ resolute defence with their “tuck-it-up-your-jumper” game plan, the greater creativity from the visitors was far more pleasing on the eye. A couple of late tries were exchanged between the teams, with the final try of the game appropriately scored by the tireless Raphael Kefalas, a great reward for leading the way in attack. The hosts - shattered, stunned and reeling at the final whistle - were left scratching their heads after being comprehensively outplayed at their own game by the marauding Bears.

Ieuan Frost was deservedly presented with The Player of the Week award, for his tenacious tackling, confident running and his first try for the Bears.

Tries: Alastair McIntosh (2), Ieuan Frost, Josh Lewis, Raphael Kefalas, Roderick Ho, Will Ruck
