U10 v New Panteg (Away) 20 Nov 2011

Monmouth Bears travelled to New Panteg to take part in a round-robin against the hosts and fellow visitors Caldicot.

First up for the Bears were the boys in black from Caldicot, who had begun the round-robin event with a comfortable victory against the home team. From the off, the Bears competed superbly at the breakdown, made all their tackles and tried spreading the ball out wide against hefty opponents whose strategy seemed limited to bull-dozing their way down the middle.

It wasn’t long before the Bears took firm control of the game – “pocket-rocket” Josh Lewis opened the scoring, only for the Caldicot All Blacks to level proceedings. The Bears responded through some excellent training ground moves with Josh scoring two further tries to complete his fine hat-trick.

The final try of the game was a great team effort, with the diminutive Brian Rowlands breaking through numerous tackles, popping up a lovely ball for the supporting Jonny Snell to run over the whitewash and touch-down.

Final Score: Caldicot 5 – 20 Monmouth

Try Scorers: Josh Lewis (3) Jonny Snell

Match two for the Bears saw them take on hosts New Panteg. It proved to be quite a tight affair early on, although tries from Raphael Kefalas and Ben Pilot saw them get ahead, only to concede a try right on half-time to see their lead halved.

The second-half however was a different affair, with the Bears really pressing home their superiority. The rampaging James Robertson increased the Bears’ lead; Rhys Williams followed suit and further tries from James and Ben completed the scoring. Excellent defence from all the Bears, particularly from Angus Mackintosh, Will Ruck, Cameron Ogilvie, Roderick Ho, Henry Watkins and Ieuan Frost, helped to ensure a comprehensive victory.

Final Score: New Panteg 5 – 30 Monmouth

Try Scorers: Ben Pilot (2) James Robertson (2) Raphael Kefalas, Rhys Williams

Overall, a great feast of rugby, with some of the boys having by far, their best game in a Bears jersey. So many players received parent nominations for the Player of the Week award and the accolade deservedly went to James Robertson, for his greatly improved tackling, strong running and two excellent tries.
