U10 v Usk (Away) 22 Jan 2012

65-15 Win

A squad of 18 Monmouth Bears made the short trip to Usk on a beautiful morning made for rugby. The hosts were a player short, so it was agreed to play 9-a-side, with the Monmouth boys split into two teams of equal ability, playing half a game each.

From the first whistle, it was clear that the match would be heavily one-sided in the Bears’ favour, with Sam Hughes opening the scoring early on. The rampaging Alastair McIntosh battered his way through weak tackling to score the next two and when Jonny Snell crossed the whitewash, the Bears were 20 – 0 ahead. Usk finally troubled the score-board, benefiting from spreading the ball out wide to their flying winger. Raphael Kefalas hit back immediately from the re-start, but with the final try of the half going to the hosts, courtesy of missed tackles from the Bears, the break arrived with the score 25 – 10 to the visitors.

All change for the Bears in the second-half, but no respite for the hosts – a tap-start to Ben Pilot saw him run the length of the Usk half of the pitch, to touch-down with only seconds gone on the clock. The Bears shifted through the gears, scoring regularly and leaving the hosts thoroughly dispirited. Will Ruck opened his account with strong running and made the next try with a fine pass to Roderick Ho out wide. Not to be out-done, the speedy Josh Lewis chipped in with the next two tries, before the hosts struck back with their only try of the half, the result once again of missed tackles from Bears defenders. Josh hit back immediately from the re-start to complete his hat-trick and with Will and Ben doubling their try tallies, the Bears closed out the game, with a land-slide 65 – 15 victory.

A fine squad effort saw the Bears notch up a record 13 tries, shared amongst eight players. One or two defensive lapses saw them concede a couple of soft tries, but on the whole, the Bears are playing some scintillating rugby to the delight of the coaches and their loyal band of supporters. Brian Rowlands, by far the smallest player on the pitch, won the parent vote for the Player of the Week award, for his barn-storming running and great tackling.
