U10 v Gwernyfed (Away) 19 Feb 2012

5-20 Loss

Monmouth Bears made the trek to Gwernyfed on a chilly morning, for their first game in four weeks and their first rugby of any sorts since the end of January. Such inactivity was far from ideal preparation for a match against the formidable hosts, who so far this season, have been the only team to conquer the marauding Bears.

The match was played on a glue-pot of a pitch, which may have accounted for the many errors from both teams in the early stages. Once again, a real battle of attrition ensued with the tackle count from both sides rapidly ascending. The Bears took time to settle, as the hosts were more dominant and decisive at the breakdown, but despite the hosts having the greater early possession and territory, it was the visitors who broke the deadlock. The Bears were able to win some precious ball, which was quickly swung out wide to the speedy Roderick Ho, who evaded two would-be tacklers on the touch-line and then run half the length of the pitch to touch down.

Back came the well-drilled hosts, smarting at falling behind despite their dominance. Their cause was made far easier, with the Bears being regularly pinged at the breakdown for off-side and having too many players in the ruck, thus rewarding them with free possession. It wasn’t long before they restored parity with their first try, with the score deadlocked 5 – 5 at half-time.

The second period was to become one-sided in favour of the hosts – they were able to make regular changes in personnel, introducing fresh legs and energy whilst the limited Bears squad had to struggle on, with some players having to grit their teeth to play through the pain barrier, having received some heavy knocks. The hosts went on to run in three second-half tries to run out comfortable winners against the by now dispirited Bears.

This was a big wake-up call for the Bears, with some key basics needing to be revisited on the training pitch if they are to be more competitive and clinical against stronger opponents. The Player of the Week Award was deservedly presented to Roderick Ho for his fine try and excellent work-rate throughout the game.
