U10 v Hereford (Home) 11 Mar 2012

64-0 Win

Glorious, warm spring sunshine welcomed the teams as Monmouth Bears hosted visitors Hereford, the first time they have faced each other since the early days of tag rugby. It was agreed to play two games, the first to the WRU Pathway and the second to English rules.

The Bears took to the field with firm reminders from their coaches ringing in their ears, to forget about individual glory and to make another pass out to a team-mate, in a bid to eliminate the “white-wash fever” experienced in previous games, an affliction no doubt suffered by all teams at this level. Within less than a minute of the start, the boys proved that they had taken on board the advice by opening the scoring with a text-book try – gaining early possession, they went through a couple of phases with quick recycling and swift passing, seeing the ball spread out wide into the hands of Jonny Snell to gleefully touch down.

Regular tries followed from the Bears, who really turned on the style with a fantastic display of aggressive running rugby. Cameron Ogilvie was next to touch down, with numerous defenders clinging to him, followed by Jonny with his second. It wasn’t long before big Will Ruck got stuck in with a typically surging run to open his tally for the day and then Jonny popped up to complete his hat-trick. Ben Pilot opened his account just before the break and with all six first-half tries converted, the teams turned round with the Bears 42 – 0 to the good.

Regular changes in the second-half saw no let-up in momentum – Josh Lewis, a bit peaky after dragging himself from his sick-bed, got things going after the break, before Ben doubled his tally for the game. Will Ruck scored the final two tries of the match to complete a fine hat-trick and despite only one successful conversion in the second period, the Bears still managed to record their biggest ever victory.

Final Score: Monmouth 64 – 0 Hereford

Tries: Jonny Snell (3), Will Ruck (3), Ben Pilot (2), Cam Ogilvie, Josh Lewis
