U12 v Abergavenny (Home) 15 Jan 2012

17-15 Win

Monmouth Tigers entertained local rivals Abergavenny on Chippenham Fields. This has proven to be a tightly contested fixture during the last few seasons and this week’s game lived up to the history.

The Tigers have been working hard on their forward play during the last few weeks and the investment was there for everyone to see on Sunday. Sustained pressure at the breakdown shortly after the K/O quickly led to the first try being scored by Brown, who broke through the defensive line to take his score. The ferocity of the Monmouth pack was evident at ruck and maul. A second try soon followed, once again finished off by Brown. At this point the Abergavenny unit, who are known for their physical style of play were struggling to gain a foot hold on the game, Monmouth continued to dominate, with wave after wave of attacks but the Aber defensive line managed to hold out.

Abergavenny rallied toward the end of the first half and after a few strong phases managed to launch an attack through the midfield and pulled back a score just before half time in the left hand corner.

Monmouth extended their lead early in the second half, once again via Brown, who touched down under the posts duly converted by Lane. This proved an important kick.

The second half settled into a more balanced affair as Monmouth tired and the Abergavenny unit managed to re-focus their minds on the task at hand. After sustained pressure Aber pulled back another score to bring them within a converted try of a draw. It was now time for Monmouth to show a dogged defensive display but after sustained pressure Aber drew level with a try in the left hand corner, the kicker tried valiantly to convert but this was a tough kick for a seasoned player.

A good game played in excellent spirit by both sides, under a cloudless sky.
