U12 v Talywain (Away) 22 Jan 2012

17-24 Loss

Monmouth Tigers took to the road for the first time in 2012 with a trip up the Hill to Talywain. This is the first time the two sides have met for a few years but history suggested a tough and physical game lay in wait from this close knit outfit from the Hills above Pontypool.

The Tigers were not to be disappointed with the direct approach of the Talywain forwards but the Tigers kept their shape and attacked hard from outset, which resulted in a score from Brown to take an early lead, on what was heavy ground for running rugby. Taywain responded with a well worked try, converted under the posts to take a 7-5 lead going into the last 5 minutes of the first half. However, after sustained pressure the Tigers unleashed a strong attack which resulting in them re-gaining the lead just before half time in the RH corner. ( HT score 7-12 Tigers)

Talywain regrouped during the break making a few tactical changes to their line-up. The Tigers failed to secure clean possession from the re-start allowing Talywain the opportunity to build pressure and despite a strong covering tackle the home side were able to recycle the ball and run in a try to take the lead. Talywain enjoyed a strong 10 minutes of rugby scoring another try to stretch the lead to 19-12. However the Tigers managed to settle and started to generate fast ruck ball to release their back line through a combination of direct and elusive running lines. The Tigers were eventually rewarded with a try in the left corner pulling back to 19-17 with 5 minutes on the clock.

Both Teams battled hard in the last few minutes in an attempt to secure the win. In the end Talywain had the rub of the green and managed to scramble over for the final score of the game, running out winners 24- 17

An excellent game of Midi rugby viewed by a gathering of local and travelling supporters.
