Monmouth U-13 Crusaders dominate round robin competition

Monmouth Young Rugby Under 13 Crusaders hosted a round robin competition with touring team Swindon Supermarine and Gwernyfed last weekend at Chippenham Fields.

It was a fine autumnal morning and the Monmouth Crusaders kicked off their first game against Welsh rivals Gwernyfed with fine spirit. The Crusaders dominated the opening play and went into the lead with a try by Number 8 Rhys Carlton.

Gwernyfed came back into the match with a try just before half time. Monmouth got off to a perfect start to the second half straight from the kick off with Rhys Carlton securing the ball and driving through a bewildered looking Gwernyfed defence to touchdown in the first minute. The remainder of the second half was a closely fought affair and the match finished with a Monmouth Crusaders victory 10 points to 5.

Monmouth then took on touring team Swindon Supermarine who were touring the Wye Valley area experiencing Welsh opposition for the first time. Monmouth dominated this match with 3 tries from Rhys Carlton, and tries from winger Rhys Kedward, centre Tom Watkins and a maiden try from promising newcomer Arturo Lloyd-Escibano. Fly Half Louis MacFarlane duly converted two of the tries. Despite the scoreline, Swindon kept their heads up and battled well and scored a well worked try towards the end of the second half.

The final score was Monmouth Crusaders 34, Swindon Supermarine 5.
