Druids v Cwmbran (Home) 29 Oct 2011

19-3 Win

Druids outplay Cwmbran

This latest Pontypool and Newport League game saw Monmouth Druids defeat Cwmbran with much to spare. The Druids backs and three quarters combined successfully to defeat the visitors by 19-3.The older Druids pack bossed the younger Cwmbran Eight and set a platform from which the Druids backs took with relish.

The kick off saw Cwmbran awarded a penalty which they failed to convert, and the referee throughout the game saw fit to penalise the Druids much more frequently than their opponents. The opening play saw the Druids take the initiative and strong driving play and quick ball caused real problems for Cwmbran. A break from a tap penalty by home scrum half Mike Hall set up a sweeping move which just failed to break the Cwmbran defence.

For all the Druids efforts and skills the only scores of the first half were from penalty goals. Captain Dave Brace kicked three and the Cwmbran Full Back landed just the one from numerous Cwmbran several attempts.

The second period saw a continuation of Druids pressure and stubborn resistance mainly from the Cwmbran pack. The Druids finally scored a try which came straight from the training ground. A scrum from just outside the Cwmbran 22 metre line was the starting point. Number Eight Nick Phillips picked up, made ground and fed Mike Hall who made a telling half break. He in turn fed Full Back Tom Cratchley who burst through the defence to touch down for an unconverted try. A great score which looked so simple but performed perfectly.

Just one more try from the Druids but again it was scored following first class handling and support play. Another good passing movement saw the ball reach Right Wing Callum Conner who was close to being pushed out of play at the corner. He quickly gave an inside pass to Tom Cratchley who dived over for an unconverted try.

A feature of the game was the dominance that the Druids pack held over the Cwmbran forwards. At the scrum particularly the home side regularly destroyed the visitors set piece. So much so, that the visitors were forced to revert to passive scrums. Say no more!

In a match in which everyone played their part, the Druids Flanker Brad Morgan, Full Back Tom Cratchley played well whilst Wings Sam Skipp & Callum Connor, Flanker George Shirlaw and Callum Connor showed real promise.

Tries: T.Cratchley (2)
