Monmouth Bears (Under 10s) Match Report – 22 April 2012 – Luctonians Festival

Fresh from their exploits on the club tour the previous weekend, the Monmouth Bears attended the Luctonians Anglo-Welsh Festival of Rugby for what would turn out to be a hard and long day of competitive rugby. A depleted squad would find the going tough but ultimately, achieve some kudos on the day in reaching the Plate Final.

The Bears started strongly in the first of their four pool games against the hosts and also winning their second, keeping clean sheets along the way. Despite this early form, the Bears fell away against far more robust opponents, but still managed to find themselves in the Plate semi-final, going through to the final on try count-back.

The recurring message from the coaches for the day would be to spread the ball out wide, but the Bears, struggling to free themselves from the sheer physicality of each game they played, failed to play their normal expansive rugby. Coupled with woeful and absent tackling at key points in the games, the Bears’ proud defensive record took a pounding.

On the day, the Bears played six games, winning two, drawing one and losing three. Highlights were keeping three more clean sheets and with their last score of the day, this was the 200th try they’ve scored in 41 games this season – not too shabby!

Pool Match 1:

Score: Monmouth Bears 5 – 0 Luconians Foxes
Try Scorer: Henry Watkins

Pool Match 2:

Score: Monmouth Bears 15 – 0 Ledbury
Try Scorers: Ben Pilot (2) Josh Lewis

Pool Match 3:

Score: Monmouth 5 – 15 Stourbridge
Try Scorer: Ben Pilot

Pool Match 4:

Score: Monmouth 5 – 20 Brecon
Try Scorers: Josh Lewis

Plate Semi-Final:

Score: Monmouth 0 – 0 Luctonians Knights (Bears progress on try count-back)

Plate Final:

Score: Monmouth 0 – 15 Mumbles

In summary, the Bears struggled all day to play their normal flowing running game. Key basics, such as rucking, passing out wide and tackling, were lacking against much stronger and “savvy” opponents.

Henry Watkins was immense in all aspects of the game and was deservedly presented with the Player of the Week Award.
