U9 v Abergavenny (Away) 06 May 2012

Monmouth u'9's travelled to Abergavenny today for the heistily re-arranged Abergavenny mini's festival.

Taking advantage of the brief respite from the rain, all sides in attendance at u'9 age group (RTB EBBW VALE, MONMOUTH, ABERGAVENNY and LYME (England somewhere) threw the ball around whenever they could, which had all supporters enjoying the afternoon.

Monmouth turned up with only 9 players and play had to be delayed for 5 / 10mins as our 10th player was stuck in traffic. When we finally got our 10, we started well with the team eager to get revenge on Abergavenny (due to Aber beating them at home earlier on in the season). Strong tackling and running by the forwards and direct running from Angus (a forward playing in the center for the first time) paved the way for a strong overall team performance and a 7 - 3 win with tries coming from both forwards and backs.

After gaining confidence from the first game, Monmouth's second game was the touring Lyme team, who easily looked our strongest test and they did not disappoint. The first half was keenly contested with Monmouths forwards edging it in doing the hard yards and following their captain Robbie who was leading by example. The backs were looking full of confidence against a Lyme team who were very strong in the tackle and had good 'open field' runners behind. Half time score - 4 - 2 to Monmouth...
Second half saw Lyme changing up a gear with some very strong tackling which knocked Monmouth out of their stride and saw us trying to force the pass and unfortunately made some basic errors. Lyme showed how to dig deep and the countless attacks and attempts to break the gainline by Oli Scriven and the rest of the team were made in vain due to the awsome defence of the touring team. As a result of connstantly 'running into a brick wall' Monmouth began to tire and as a result Lyme came back into the game and finally won 7 - 5. (This game taking its tole on Monmouth with Ben our big hitting prop having to go off injured)

The final game saw us playing against RTB EBBW VALE. Only having 9 players due to the hard previous game, we managed to borrow a player from Abergavenny and after some harsh words off the coach prior to the start Monmouth teared into RTB with strong running by forwards Robbie, Oli, William and Rui, and some darting runs from Lewis, Adam, Henry and Oliver. Monmouth took a 4 - 2 advantage at half time.
During the second half Monmouth continued to put on the pressure with further trys from the Abergavenny player on our team and a mixture of forwards and backs to finish the game 6 - 3.

Monmouth played their hearts out and came second best to a better, stronger team. A round of applause off the parents was given to the players for a very good day and year in general with the under 9's winning 80% of their games....

A huge Well done from both coaches.
