14-29 Loss

Encouraging Trial Game

Croesyceiliog of the Swalec 3rd Division were the visitors for Monmouth’s second trial game on Chippenham last Saturday and went away with their superior status maintained but with Monmouth’s 14-29 loss nevertheless providing considerable encouragement for the coming season.

After falling 12 points behind to two pacey incursions on their left in a four minute spell in the first quarter, the strength of the home pack helped settle things down and it was no surprise when prop Luke Hunter grounded the ball following a line-out and a maul soon after.

The visitors retaliated promptly with a try in the right hand corner of the field despite a robust tackle from the opposing winger but they were thereafter thwarted by good tackling and some rousing counter-attacking to ensure an interval deficit of no more than 7-17.

The third quarter was far more even with some crucial tackling on both sides and then a loose pass thrown after a Monmouth centre produced an exhilarating break gave Crooesyceiliog the loose ball and another try which luckily again went unconverted.
Croesyceiliog went further into the lead as their backs found another gap but when they kicked deep into the Monmouth 22, despite extreme pressure, No 8 Mike Griffiths was back to cover. Using his typical strength he slipped the ball to new Captain Will Copley who linked with Matt Tabb who split apart the visiting defence and outpaced them to score the final try under the posts as well as to preface a rousing last 5 minutes.
Although outscored 14-29, Monmouth did themselves a lot of credit and if all the individual talents on display can be retained, and fully gel, a good season and Chepstow away next week beckon.
