Druids v Hereford (Away) 06 Oct 2012

8-31 Loss

Home advantage important

Monmouth Druids travelled to Hereford RFC for an eleventh hour arranged fixture. It was in the 2003/04 season that the two teams last faced each other, both matches played on Hereford soil.

The game kicked off one hour late because the referee, the Hereford coach, was delayed so the delay was frustrating for both teams.

From the start the larger home pack ran hard and caused the Druids to tackle hard and frequently. It was the Druids who scored first, somewhat against the run of play. Captain Dave Brace kicked a 40 metre penalty goal to edge the visitors in front 3-0.
A fine covering tackle from Right Wing Rob Farr prevented Hereford from scoring the opening try.

Tom Cratchley, the Druids Scrum Half, set off from the base of a scrum. He weaved his way passed some cover defence but just failed to touch down in the corner.
It was inevitable that Hereford would score despite valiant Druids defensive play. The home side used the bulk in their side to cross for three tries, one of which was converted, to put them into a 17-3 lead at half time.

The second period started with the Druids determined to make inroads into the home lead. Their lineout which did not function in the first half, started to produce some possession. From such a lineout, the Druids set up a rolling maul, from which Tom Cratchley dived over for a fine unconverted try.

Rob Farr ran strongly on every occasion he had the ball in his hands and it took good Hereford defence to keep him out. Tiredness took its toll on the Druids, who had only one substitute as against five on the bench for Hereford. The home side wrapped up the victory with two more converted tries and a 31-8 win.

It is not unusual for the losers to make complaints about the opposition and the Druids will have some gripes about the referee. In the first half particularly, his decision making was in Hereford’s favour and the victory margin was not representative of the contest.

For the visitors, Dave Brace and Andy Howells battled hard and the Druids as a team can be proud of their efforts.
