Two match summaries this week ....

Druids back to Winning Ways

Monmouth Druids entertained Cwmbran in League game on Chippenham Mead. After a draw last week against Caldicot, they were looking to go one better against Cwmbran who were higher in the table than the home side.
Cwmbran could not field a prop forward at the start of the match and unopposed scrums were the order of the day for both sides .The early exchanges saw the Druids put the ball through the hand more to gain ground whilst the visitors preferred the individual charging runs trying to breach the home defence. Territorially the Druids had the better of play and Captain Dave Brace who kicked superbly all afternoon, slotted two penalty goals to give a 6-0 lead.

Outside Half Greg Wilding kicked well out of hand to keep the Druids going forward before the first try of the game .It began with a maul in the Druids 22 metre area. The home side Number Eight Nick Phillips broke on the blind side and made 10 metres up to their 10 metre line. He fed Left Wing Gareth Jones who put his ears back and sprinted down the touchline and over the Cwmbran line for a fine try. Dave Brace converted to increase the Druids lead to 13-0.

Brace was prominent again when he put in a fine tackle to stop a Cwmbran Centre in full flight for the Druids line. Scrum Half Tom Cratchley tried hard to break the gain line without success and the referee blew the half time whistle.

Cwmbran must have had a stern talking to at the break because the restart saw them reduce their arrears. Some concerted pressure saw the visitors score a try which was converted to make the score 13-7.
Suddenly Cwmbran were within a converted try of the Druids and they built up a period of pressure which tested the home defence. The Druids first up tackling was excellent and they drove Cwmbran attackers backwards. A yellow card awarded to each side was a sign of tenseness in a game that was hard fought but never over stepped the mark.

Then a fine try started by Druids Full Back Huw Adams. He fielded a Cwmbran defensive kick on the half way line and surged into the visitors 22 metre area. Dave Brace was up in support and he raced behind the posts for a cracking try which he duly converted.
Aaran Mills came on as a substitute in his first game for the Druids and a memorable debut it was. After Druids passing on the left hand side Mills was on the end of a move to touch down over the Cwmbran line. Dave Brace converted to give him a 100% kicking record in the game and a 27-7 victory . Scot Macgowan, Andy Howells and Adam Churchill put in good displays in a spirited team effort.

After a somewhat disappointing start to the season the team performance in the last two games has greatly improved and offers promise for the rest of the season.

And from Captain Dave Brace ...

Great game today boys and exactly the same spirit and team ethic as last season! The last two games have shown what we are capable of, as well as how good a team we are when everyone is available!!

Front row, Tom green, Rob Jode and brains! Passive scrums but outstanding, big hits, strong runs and seemed to be all over the place!

Howler and Gaz Rowlands, solid, strong and as always put their heart and soul into the game.

Back row, Scott McGowan, Adam Churchill and Nick Phillips (the ginger goat). You will not get any better back rows in our league! Quality throughout, tackled everything, defended superbly and put there bodies on the line time after time.

Tom Cratchley at 9, couple of weeks with the firsts and has come back with an awesome box kicking ability as well as the heart of a lion!

Greg wildthing, really starting to control the game, tackles like a forward and has made a huge difference this year, turning up to every game and an example if consistency.

Mr Spary, my centre partner, good hands, good tackling and upon request controlled the defensive line exceptionally well

Wings Matt 'Procter' Morgan and Gareth Jones, provided some real spark to the back line! Good pace and fearless in the tackle despite some big lads running straight at them.

Full back and human wrecking ball Huw Adams, pace (I know he looks like a prop), skilful and hits the line with such force is a nightmare to stop!

And finally the subs all whom came on and made an impact! Arron (don't know your second name) scoring on his debut, a late addition but a very useful one!

Matt hurst who swears he hasn't put on weight but powerful running and he didn't ask the reg one question!! And then skippy or some might call him slippy!! Can score from anywhere and is a very dangerous runner (will someone please buy him some studs!!)

Thank you all! If you can commit to this season I know we can win the league and cup and put in some fantastic performances that'll make the spectators, coaching team and your captain very proud!!

Great team work and great commitment. The future of Monmouth rugby is in good hands!!
