Druids v Pill Harriers (Home) 17 Nov 2012

7-21 Loss

Bitter Pill to Swallow

Monmouth Druids were looking to improve their League position when they faced visitors Pill Harriers who so far have had a promising season. Both squads were up to full strength for the match on a ‘glue pot ‘ of a pitch which proved to be stamina sapping.

The first half saw Pill show all their attacking skills and this made the Druids employ all their defensive wiles. Numerous Pill attacks were mainly nullified by the Druids through courage and first up tackling. The close of the half saw Pill score three converted tries through Wings Rob Lloyd and Dai Jones and Outside Half Brad Williams who successfully improved all three.

So at 21 points down what would the second half offer for the Druids?. The home side upped their efforts and they mounted attacks on the Pill line, so much so that Pill were forced into desperate defence themselves. Try as they did the Druids could only score one try despite valiant efforts and strong Pill tackling. The score came from a scrum close to the Pill try line.Druids Scrum Half Kyle Price broke away and drew the defence. As he was tackled he flicked a reverse pass back inside to Number Eight Nick Phillips who crashed over the Pill line for Dave Brace to convert. This try was scant reward for huge Druids efforts.

The final whistle blew with the score 21-7 to the visitors but the Druids had the small consolation of winning the second period 5-0. The deficit in the first half being conclusive. We all know we could not play a game without a referee but it is expected that the official should know the off-side rule for the benefit of both sides.

Pill were a good side and the fact that their first team did not have a game gave them more options in selection. Their running, passing and support play stretched the Druids to breaking point. Strong individual runs by Tom Cratchley, Greg Wilding and Lee Watkins could not be developed and in defence Full Back Mattie Morgan was outstanding with good catching and sharp runs.

Three home defeats this season but the Druids performance is steadily improving and gives optimism for the rest of the season.
