Druids v Abergavenny (Away) 05 Jan 2013

17-30 Loss

Druids Run Out of Steam

Twelve months ago, Monmouth Druids travelled to Abergaveny RFC, and defeated the Quins in a close high scoring game. This year they hoped to repeat the success but after a good start they could not quite put in the same result.
They started promisingly enough, in fact scoring a try within the first few minutes of the match. Strong running by the Druids pack paved the way for right wing Sam Skipp to round his opponent and dive over the Quins try line. The try was not improved but the Druids supporters would not have been too disappointed, such was the dominance of the visitors. Time after time, forceful running caused mayhem in the Abergavenny defence as the Druids used the slight slope on the pitch to good effect.

The Quins were forced into conceding numerous penalties but the Druids failed to capitalise on these awards and in fact missed three penalty kicks trying to establish a meaningful lead before playing uphill in the second half.

Against the run of play, the Quins broke into the Druids half and scored a good try to bring the scores level. This spurred on the Druids and they doubled their efforts. They failed to score a try but Dave Brace did kick three penalty goals to give an interval lead of 14 points to 5.

The Druids quickly increased this lead, once again through a Dave Brace penalty goal but the Quins were starting to take the initiative and their collective forward play was beginning to tell. This lead to the Quins scoring a try from a tap penalty and was converted to close the score gap.

They followed this up with another unconverted try, this time from a lineout and a penalty goal gave the Quins a 25-17 lead. To round the scoring off the home side drove round the front of a lineout to cross near the corner flag. The conversion failed but a 30-17 victory was the result of good organisation and superior determination.

From a very promising first half display the Druids performance dipped and coupled with the Quins improvement brought a turn around in the match result. They failed to establish a lead from the first half and Abergavenny made them pay.
