Druids v Pill Harriers (Home) 06 Apr 2013

36-24 Win

Try Bonanza for Druids

Monmouth Druids were expecting to travel to Newport to face Pill Harriers in a Pontypool and Newport league game. At the request of Pill the game was transferred to Monmouth but they requested unopposed scrums for the game. There were some trepidation in the Druids ranks because Pill had defeated the home side earlier in the season by 21-3.

The Druids were quickly into their game and Centre Greg Wilding made a searing break and made ground deep into the Pill half. Although tackled Wilding off loaded to Scrum Half Tom Cleverly to race around the defence to touch down half way between the corner flag and the posts. Dave Brace converted to give the Druids a 7 nil lead. Pill responded positively and following forceful play on the left they crossed the Druids try line for an unconverted try.

In turn the Druids retaliated by scoring another try through wing Gareth Jones. From an attacking move which stalled in the Pill 25 metre area, they quickly recycled the ball which was fed in turn to the left for Jones to sprint over the Pill try line. This try was not converted.

The home side dominated play and threatened the Pill line but choosing the wrong options meant that scoring opportunities were lost. From broken play, the Druids deservedly extended their lead when Greg Wilding burst past would be tacklers to cross near the posts and Dave Brace converted to further increase their lead.

As the half time whistle approached, Druids Number Eight Nick Phillips, forced his way over the Pill line after concerted forward play. Dave Brace converted to give the home side a 26-5 lead at the break.

Far from conceding defeat, Pill launched a series of attacks which had the home side defending desperately. From a scrum, the Pill Outside Half kicked to the corner, and the right wing gathered and touched down. The try was converted leaving the score at 26-12.

Greg Wilding scored his second try to restore the Druids lead but the conversion kick failed. Pill were not done and their left wing gathered a cross kick, which caused the Druids knapping. He scampered over in the left hand corner for a fine opportunist effort which was not converted.

The last score in an entertaining match went to the Druids when forward pressure allowed Flanker Joel Price to crash over for a 36-24 victory. An entertaining match in which the home side scored six tries. Play see sawed one way then another, attack, defence and counter attack whilst the young referee played his part in a open free flowing game.
