Youth v Newbridge (Home) 12 Jan 2013

5-5 Draw

Monmouth Youth entertained Newbridge last Saturday (12th January) in a very closely contested match.
Newbridge, with a strong rugby tradition, came and started the game intensely; clearly having intent of gaining a win against a Monmouth side that have rarely lost this season.
The early play saw Monmouth under pressure with Kester Mobbs-Morgan and Morgan Paley on the wings producing some gutsy tackles in defence.
The lack of recent games for both sides showed as they struggled to play consistently, with errors causing multiple stoppages.

Following some strong forward play by Newbridge and some questionable tackling from Monmouth, Newbridge scored the first try of the game to give them a 5-0 lead. Despite some good tactical kicks to gain ground from Max Senior, Monmouth failed to capitalise and level the score in the first half.

As the game progressed the rugby improved marginally, but Monmouth’s superior fitness enabled them to press hard to take control.

Although the weight advantage had shown in the early scrums, the Monmouth pack eventually found their form, resulting in two good strikes against the head by Ed White.

Some good ball work from the Monmouth backs saw Jake Meredith break the defensive line, only to be stopped just short of the line, but with the quick support of his pack and managing to stay on his feet he was driven over to level the score 5-5.
There was no further score with the match ending in a draw.

While the work rate of the Monmouth squad was undisputable, the team will need to return to their pre-Christmas form quickly for the two challenging fixture in the next fortnight – Risca away in a league fixture followed by a cup quarter-final at home against the unbeaten, top-of-the-league, Cwmbran Telephone: +44 (0)1600 712309 Email: copyright Monmouth RFC 2018
