Monmouth Bears: Round-robin vs. Gwernyfed and Ledbury (Home)

Playing their first home game since the first weekend of November, Monmouth Bears hosted a round-robin involving Gwernyfed and Ledbury on a chilly bright morning at Chippie Fields. Gwernyfed, seeking revenge following their home loss to the Bears last month, were first up.

Match 1: Monmouth vs. Gwernyfed

Games between Monmouth and Gwernyfed are traditionally tight physical affairs and this would prove to be the case once again. The boys in green were quickly into their stride taking the game to the hosts, but were kept at bay by a mixture of brave defending and moves breaking down. The Bears were always on the back foot and chances of their own were limited. The only try of the game came after a sustained period of pressure by the visitors and with the Bears trying to run out of defence, an intercepted pass saw Gwernyfed cross the line, with them going into the break 5 – 0 ahead.

The second half saw the game swing both ways, with each team seeming to take it in turns to go on the attack. Try as they might, the Bears had few scoring opportunities although the same could be said of the visitors, with the game seemingly played between the 22’s with no quarter given. The second half proved to be a real stale-mate although compelling to the last whistle as the game hung in the balance, with Gwernyfed running out narrow winners, once again beating the Bears by a single try.

Final Score: Monmouth 0 – 5 Gwernyfed

Match 2: Monmouth vs. Ledbury

Looking to put the narrow defeat behind them, the disappointed Bears took on local rivals Ledbury whom they had beaten handsomely earlier in the season. It took some time for the Bears to get going as Ledbury were certainly more physical and tackled far better than before. However, the pressure began to take its toll as big Will Ruck finally crossed the line for the first Bears try of the day. It wasn’t long before the visitors stunned the hosts with a try of their own, with half time seeing the teams all square at 5 – 5.

With the stern words from their coaches still ringing in their ears, the Bears set about the second half with great determination, doubling their tally in the first minute with a fine jinking effort from Ieuan Rose. Soon after, speedy winger Will Green found space out wide to score for the second week running. Full-back Jonny Snell, always looking to run at every opportunity was rewarded with a try of his own. With the game comfortably in the bag, the boys succumbed to whitewash fever, with everyone looking to score themselves instead of keeping shape and discipline in spreading the ball out wide. Despite this, Will Ruck went on to complete his hat-trick, with two more tries rampaging through the visitors’ by now desperate defence, thus seeing the Bears run out comfortable winners.

Final Score: Monmouth 30 – 5 Ledbury

Tries: Will Ruck (3) Will Green, Jonny Snell & Ieuan Rose (1 each)

A wonderful morning of rugby once again saw the Bears very competitive and hard to beat. Overall, there were some fine individual performances, making the Player of the Week decision for the coaches very difficult to make – Alastair McIntosh, rampaging in attack and excellent in defence, was the deserved recipient.
