U11 v Cwmbran (Home) 27 Jan 2013

0-45 Loss

A much anticipated return to rugby following the Arctic conditions of the week before saw the Bears host strong opponents Cwmbran. It was disappointing that a combination of illnesses and prior commitments depleted numbers with only 11 Bears ready to face the challenge. Up stepped Griff Copley from the U9s to make his debut for the Bears and what a spirited effort he made – transfer forms are currently being prepared and fees under negotiation before the close of the transfer window!

The Bears lost a man in the first couple of minutes to injury, which saw Brian Rowlands take no further part in proceedings – the match continued with 11-a-side. It was Cwmbran, well drilled, physical and clinical who began to dominate proceedings. Coupled with individual errors from the Bears, the visitors started shifting through the gears, scoring with ease, half-time arriving with them five unanswered tries to the good.

Confidence amongst the home players was diminishing, but with encouragement from their coaches and loyal supporters, the second period was much more competitive, with them reducing Cwmbran to only two tries, whilst at the same time, taking the game to the visitors and enjoying far greater territory and possession.

The final whistle arrived with the Bears suffering their heaviest ever defeat, the first time this season they have lost by a margin of more than one try. Seven unanswered tries plus kicks tells its own story – the Bears need to tighten up on the basics, make their tackles and play as a team if they are to rediscover their imperious form from earlier in the season and become competitive again – oh, and a few extra players would help as well!

Cameron Ogilvie received the accolade of Player of the Week and well done again to young Griff for stepping into the breach.
