35-20 Win

Monmouth Bears (Under 11s) Match Report – Sunday 24 March 2013

Monmouth Bears vs. Bromyard (Home)

After three weeks without a game, Monmouth Bears returned to competitive action by welcoming Bromyard’s combined U11s & 12s. Arctic temperatures would make conditions difficult and uncomfortable – thankfully, we were able clear the pitch beforehand of some stray polar bears. Talking of polar bears, one or two of the visitors’ players were of similar size, one in particular seeming totally out of place in an U11s match – I did ask him what shaving blades he preferred to use and swapped tips on after-shave – blimey, he made our Big Will look like one of the 7 dwarves!

Back to the game – despite the large opponents, the Bears were not over-awed and confidently took the game to the visitors. However, some rustiness and cold hands saw numerous chances go begging, before newcomer Will Davies opened the scoring with a fine finish down the right wing. The visitors struck back almost immediately with Old-Spice boy rampaging through non-existent tackles to touch down.

Alastair McIntosh at centre got going with some fine aggressive running, bagging a fine brace of tries to put some daylight between the teams. Diminutive Will Ruck (never thought I’d say that in a match report!) was up next, charging through from close quarters to open his account for the day. A try from the visitors right on half-time saw the teams reach the break, with the Bears 20 – 10 to the good – off the players trudged to the touch-line in search of warmth.

The second-half saw the Bears stay in control, although some rather hesitant tackling always kept the visitors in the game. Will Ruck doubled his tally for the day with a try out wide; hard-working scrum-half Ieuan Rose scored a fine solo effort, before Alastair completed a fine hat-trick to finish off the scoring for the Bears. Bromyard scored a couple of their own to see the score finish at 35 – 20 in favour of the Bears.

A good display from the Bears, especially given the fact that they had not played together for some time and also the Arctic conditions – hope the weather warms up soon. Will Ruck was presented with the Player of the Week Award for his fine work at the breakdown, aggressive tackling and his brace of tries.

Final Score: Monmouth 35 – 20 Bromyard

Tries: Alastair McIntosh (3), Will Ruck (2), Will Davies, Ieuan Rose
