U10 v Malvern (Home) 21 Oct 2012

Monmouth had a convincing victory against a Malvern team on Sunday. Malvern had arrived ready to play under the slightly different Welsh rules. The teams agreed to play four periods of ten minutes. The tone was immediately set as Monmouth turned over Malvern ball and Rob Nixon scored the first of his five tries with strong direct running. Four other tries came in that first quarter, with Monmouth tackling, rucking and passing well.

Rolling substitutions were used to give all 15 Monmouth players a good run out, and to swap forwards and backs to give the lads more experience.

Angus Whitehead showed strength, speed and good handling skills to enable him to score five tries as well. Rui Stayton de Souza gave an excellent forward display leading his team in rucking and presenting the ball for the support. Beau, who is relatively new to the team, played well in the centre, grabbing a try for himself. Coach Tony Richards was very pleased that the Monmouth lads kept a clean sheet, to go alongside their 15 tries.

The Malvern coach picked out Xav Brevet as the best Monmouth player, as he had tackled and disrupted like a true open-side.

Next week, the Lions travel to Ledbury to test their skills under English rules.
