U10 v Ledbury / Gwernyfed (Home) 13 Jan 2013

Monmouth Lions 6 Ledbury 2
Monmouth Lions 6 Gwernyfed 0

Monmouth under tens had a fantastic Sunday morning on the 13th January on the Chippenhamgate Meadows, 19 players all taking part over two games.

The previous weekend had seen Monmouth overcome Caerleon, before Pontyclun gave the Lions a lesson in competing for, and securing, the ball at the tackle area, winning comfortably. The Monmouth lads certainly took note, this week putting together two winning performances.

Having beaten Ledbury in Herefordshire before Christmas under English laws, the lads were confident of winning again. They started well, scoring four unanswered tries in the first half through Angus Whitehead, Henry Green and Oliver Williams (two). Ledbury pushed hard in the second half, both teams scoring twice, Monmouth, through Ben and Kieran Williams.

The Lions and Gwernyfed have enjoyed a close rivalry over a few years, Monmouth losing the December match at Talgarth. Everything clicked into place for the home side on Sunday with excellent tackling, rucking, off-loading and ball carrying. Rob Nixon led the way with a Man of the Match performance featuring two tries and strong runs, often being able to pop a pass to the supporting Kieran Williams.

Oliver Scrivens made a few trademark mazy runs, scoring twice, Henry Green and Angus Whitehead adding the other scores. The handling and ball retention were excellent, and the team and coaches were very pleased to keep a clean sheet. Many thanks to Adrian Whitehead who refereed both games, as well as the game between Ledbury and Gwernyfed.
The Lions face Caerleon and Cwmbran in two weeks and coach Tony Richards will be keen to ensure the Monmouth lads repeat their performance.
