Youth v Berry Hill (Home) 10 Nov 2012

14-0 Win

Due to the Autumn international Monmouth RFC Youth entertained Berry Hill Youth team on the sports ground with an earlier kick-off. The game was a closely contested match throughout all aspects of play. Whilst the reverse fixture earlier in the season saw a comfortable win for Monmouth, they were well aware that this was not going to be an easy game. Berry Hill had acquired an number of additional players and under the new coaching staff were always going to be a tough opposition.

Monmouth started the game strongly, building on the solid performance of the their pack led by captain Cameron Watson-Boycott. The front row of Dan Edwards, Dan Musselbrook and Grant Davies produced one of their best scrumaging performances of the season to date. A number of good runs from Dan White, Cameron Boycott and Aaron Mills saw Monmouth threaten the Berry Hill line a number of times in the first 20 minutes. Following a break at pace Liam Musselbrook, in the centre, fed winger James “Snowie” Davies who cut inside to beat two players before finishing of a well worked move with some individual sparkle. Duly converted by Maximus Senior.

Berry Hill came back strong at Monmouth, using the strength and strong carrying of their pack. Spurred on by their pack “stepping up” the Berry Hill backs worked hard to break the Monmouth line. This was met with some heavy-duty tackling from the Monmouth backs, one crunching tackle by Jake Williams reminded Berry Hill that Monmouth were as determined in defence as attack. At half time the score was 7 – 0 to Monmouth.

Monmouth started the second half strongly, looking to build on their first half lead. Morgan Paley at full-back for Monmouth showed good pace and handling by ensuring any long defensive kicks by Berry Hill were well returned, ensuring Monmouth kept the pressure on. Following one of these Paley runs Liam Musselbrook broke the Berry Hill defence to score Monmouth’s second try of the game. Converted by Max Senior.

Berry Hill were determined to score and came back at Monmouth strongly. Monmouth defended for much of the remaining 10 minutes, with Berry Hill doggedly threatening the Monmouth line. But for a strong-minded and determined tackling frenzy by the Monmouth pack Berry Hill would surely have scored. At the final whistle the score remained 14 – 0 to Monmouth.

This continues Monmouth Youth best start to a season for many years. They have now played 11 games and won 9 of them.
