Youth v Tradegar (Home) 08 Dec 2012

15-5 Win

Monmouth Youth played Tredegar Youth on Chippenham Mead Saturday following Cinderford cancelling the scheduled league game. Both coaching teams were keen to see their squads get back into action following the Autumn internationals .

Monmouth fielded a strong line-up and bench, with a good strong team performance. The game was closely competed in a very even and entertaining match. The first half saw some strong scrumaging from the Monmouth against and heavier Tredegar pack. Luke Donald and Cameron Boycott ensured some good lineout ball, with Jamie Morris, Andrew “Mogsie” Morgan and Tom Hawkins all carrying well with some good surges. Monmouth were first to score when Maxi Senior finish off a good backline move in the corner. But for some good defensive work by Tredegar, Monmouth almost increased their lead following a superb drive and rolling maul of 30 yard by the Monmouth pack, which was controlled well by “captain marvel” Cameron Boycott. The backline passing of the Monmouth backs ensured that Tredegar were constantly threatened, eventually resulting in another tried scored by Liam Musslebrook. Despite being 10 pts down Tredegar showed good resilience and character to constantly challenge and pressurise Monmouth in all areas of play.

As the second half started the Tredegar pack and their big carriers built a solid platform of forward momentum resulting in their first try of the game. This period of pressure from Tredegar saw some solid tackling from Monmouth with a few of note from Hawkins. Monmouth strength this season has come from their team spirit and determination to close out games that they would previously have let slip; this was further evident in their strong reply when scrumhalf Sam Thomas completed the scoring with a quick finish from the back of a ruck. The final result being a 15 – 5 win for Monmouth.

This continues Monmouth Youth best start to a season for many years. They have now played 13 games, winning 11.This coming Saturday Monmouth Youth entertain Pontypool United Youth on Chippenham Mead, kick-off 14:30.
