U9 v Minehead Tigers Challenge Tournament (Away) 20 Apr 2013

Bright weather saw the Chiefs travel to Butlins Minehead in Somerset to participate in the Tigers Challenge Tournament.

As usual we fail to travel well and got off to a sluggish start losing the first two games by large margins but then again it was the first time the boys had played rugby across a pitch which sloped 45 degrees!
In our final game on Saturday no less than a win was required and the CHIEFS duly obliged stunning the hosts with an emphatic victory by some 5 tries to 1.

This meant that the Chiefs had qualified through to the knockout stages of the Bowl trophy. To say they were pleased was an understatement and the travelling fathers were quite pleased as well.

Sunday saw the Chiefs enter the knockout stages of the competition with renewed vigour and heaps of determination and they started by beating Minehead Barbarians First team by 7 tries to 1 despite some less than sporting behaviour from the home side. Hence the Chiefs were in their first ever final!

The final saw the Chiefs race into an early lead and by half time they were leading by 4 tries to 1. Then Wells RFC started the second half with a vengeance running in 2 quick tries before the Chiefs scored the all-important winning try. Then it was a matter of hanging onto their lead. Despite Wells throwing everybody into all-out attack the Chiefs hung on to win their first Final and boy oh boy were they pleased.
Victory was made even more special when each player had to go up on stage in front of all teams to receive their medals from a current Leicester Tigers player in a spectacular awards ceremony.

Then to make the day even more special Ben Ford won the Magic Moment Trophy for an outstanding display of jinxing, running rounded off with a superb try!

We also then got news that Nikolaj won the speed Tiger Challenge setting a new time record for the event.

Overall the Chiefs had a fantastic time at the tournament leaving with not just trophies but lifelong memories and new friendships made and 14 young boys made their parents rather proud that weekend!
