Druids v Risca (Home) 14 Sep 2013

17-18 Loss

Druids Just Fail

The first home fixture of the new season for Monmouth Druids was against Risca RFC. This game turned out to be the opening game of the campaign for the Druids because last week’s match against Gwernyfed was abandoned by the referee for a serious leg injury to a Monmouth player.

The Druids fielded a side which differed greatly from the team of last season so new beginnings for the team. The opening period saw Risca put the home side under pressure and they had the better of the play. Only sound tackling by the Druids kept their line in tact but they did take the lead with a 25 metre penalty goal by Centre Dave Brace.

Risca upped their efforts and attacked the Druids try line. A Risca try seemed certain but a pass to the winger was intercepted by Druids wing Mattie Morgan who set off towards the visitors try line with defenders in hot pursuit. No one managed to catch him and he touched down between the posts for a fine individual try. Dave Brace converted to give the Druids a 10-0 lead.

Risca would have been unhappy with this score line as they must of thought they deserved the lead themselves. They did reduce the arrears with an unconverted try from Flanker Ian Gallimore to make score 10-5 as the referee blew for half time.

On the restart an attempted Druids penalty goal hit a post and bounced wide and this proved to be crucial at the end. Risca did kick a penalty to make the score 10-8 to the home side.

Risca pressed strongly and they took the lead through a stroke of misfortune for the Druids. A long, high Risca kick bounced wickedly for the Druids Full Back and visitors wing following up gathered and touched down between the posts. The successful conversion gave Risca a lead which stretched to 18-10 with another penalty goal.

The Druids were not finished however and good play saw Left Wing Tom Gibson cross in the corner. Dave Brace successfully converted from the touchline with a fine kick and the final whistle blew.

Risca fully deserved the one point victory with their forwards winning loads of possession at line outs and scrums. For the Druids, Milo Thomas competed well at the lineout and Captain Nick Phillips ran hard and proved difficult to stop. First up tackling was good for the home side and this new team will improve as the season progresses.
