U10 v Caerleon (Home) 15 Sep 2013

0-10 Loss

Monmouth U10'sRugby (The Chiefs) were pleased to welcome Caerleon for their first home game on Chippenham Fields. With a squad of 22 players to pick from and with new game rules applying the coaches wanted to give all their players a game. To accommodate all players the game was split into three periods.

From early on the Monmouth players were struggling to adapt to the new rules with many good moves coming to an abrupt end, on the other hand Caerleon settled in well, dominating field position and were first to score a try following some missed tackles by the home team. The Chiefs responded immediately with a flowing move which was being well marshalled by Caerleon, but a loose pass from Monmouth resulted in an interception try which was converted to give the visitor a significant lead. This lifted the confidence of the away team and a further try followed to end the first period.

It was a new Monmouth team that took the field for the second period with many of the players experiencing their first game of rugby. With a mixture of both new and experienced players the coaches will be pleased with what they saw. Caerleon kept with their experienced squad and although Monmouth conceded four tries in this period without reply it was not one way traffic. Nikolaij was twice held up short of the line and Ben Ford created havoc in the home team defence with his jinking runs however it was the heroic tackling by Kian that made Caerleon work for every score.

The final period was a much better contest with Monmouth having the most of the play for the majority of the game however silly errors handed possession back to Caerleon and it was not wasted. Despite the Chiefs valiant defensive efforts when they were without the ball, the tackle count took its total and Caerleon managed to score three tries in the final few minutes of the game.

The Chiefs can take heart from this performance knowing that with some more training together with a better understanding of the new rules they can look forward to a good season.
