Druids v Cwmbran (Home) 28 Sep 2013

17-15 Win

Druids Deserve Win

Monmouth Druids entertained Cwmbran in a league game looking for their first win of the new season. It proved to be a tense struggle, keenly fought and victory achieved only in the final minutes.

The opening 20 minutes saw the home team have a distinct edge and on reflection will be very disappointed not to have obtained a lead. In fact Cwmbran started the scoring with a penalty goal they were awarded by an enthusiastic referee. The home side responded with a penalty goal themselves to make the score 3-3.

Both sides missed extending the scoring but failed to kick the penalty goals that were awarded. Cwmbran took the advantage of loose Druids tackling to take the lead following a series of attacks in the home side 22 metre area. The visitors scored a try from broken play when quick passing allowed one of their forwards to cross the Druids line halfway between the posts and corner flag. The kick surprisingly failed but Cwmbran took the lead 8-3 unexpectedly against the run of play.

Just before the interval the Druids regained the lead they must have felt they deserved. From a tap penalty close to the Cwmbran line Prop ‘Brains’ Watkins drove over the try line close to the posts. Centre Dave Brace converted to edge the Druids into the lead 10-8.

The second half saw the Druids threaten but try as they did, could not breach the Cwmbran defence. Much of the fault was caused by Druids players taking the wrong option, mainly through trying individual efforts rather than team work and driving into the contact area rather than moving the ball.

With 15 minutes remaining, Cwmbran took the lead from a mistake by the Druids. From open play, the visitors picked up a fumbled pass and quick hands allowed the winger to score near the posts. The conversion was successful for Cwmbran to regain the lead 15-10.

The Druids upped their efforts but again through faulty decision making could not break through. With minutes remaining, a Cwmbran attack broke down and the Druids picked up the loose ball. Outside Half Greg Wilding took a pass from a team mate and sped towards the Cwmbran line. Three defenders chased in vane but failed to catch him and he touched down between the posts. Wilding converted to give the Druids a 17-15 win.

Scrum Half Dan White showed promise but his play was loose and he lost contact sometimes with his teammates. The change of switching Tom Cratchley into the scrum half role was a success and he certainly ‘steadied the ship’. Mention to of Bob Prewett who at an unknown age played at prop forward.

The end was a reversal of last week’s result which went against the Druids. This was the Druids first win of the season and Captain Nick Phillips will be pleased with this.

The home side will review this victory and seek to bring changes to their play to help prevent future problems. A great result though and thoroughly deserved.
