Druids v Gwernyfed (Home) 21 Dec 2013

22-7 Win

Druids Double Up

Monmouth Druids came back from last week’s defeat determined to get back on winning ways. Their opponents were Gwernyfed RFC who they beat earlier in the season in a close, exciting encounter.
The pitch on Chippenham Mead took more than a stud, in fact it was very soft and the dark overhead conditions made playing running rugby a difficult proposition.

The game started with a dramatic score within the first few minutes. Gwernyfed kicked out of defence and the ball was caught by Left Wing Sam Skipp close to the touchline. He stretched his long legs and set off on a long run. His powerful run seemed to surprise the Gwernyfed players and when in full flight there was little doubt of the end result. He shrugged off some attempted tackles, beat the full back and crossed the visitors try line between the posts for a fine score. Outside Half Aaron Price converted and the Druids had an early seven point lead.

The Druids play was full of confidence and their driving play and support work was in good order. The home side frequently attacked from loose play but the Gwernyfed tackling was of a high standard and kept the Druids at bay. In fact the only further Druids score was a penalty goal kicked by Aaron Price and the home side missed another penalty to add to their score.

Just before the interval, Gwernyfed opened their account with a fine try starting just inside the Druids half. A missed defensive tackle allowed the visitors to release their backs. Good crisp handling allowed their left wing to cross the home line in the corner. The fine conversion kick was successful to narrow the score line to 10-7 and promised a real contest in the second period.

Starting the half, the Druids must have wondered how their lead was only three points after having most of the play. Gwernyfed started in determined fashion and showed there was more to their play than just defending well. They tested the Druids defence and occasionally pressed on the home side try line. It was time for the Druids to show resilience and they had to counter attack from within their own territory.

Gwernyfed transgressed frequently at the breakdown and the referee was strict in this aspect of play. The Druids took full advantage of these awards to kick four penalty goals through Aaron Price and Centre Adam Roberts. No further tries were scored, quite surprising in a game which was loose and open. This 22-7 victory was most welcome for the Druids and keeps them above Gwernyfed in league table. Aaron Price kicked well, out of hand and off the kicking tee. The home side back row helped in thwarting the Gwernyfed come back in the second period.

Next up, a derby against old rivals Usk RFC.
