U11 v Ross (Home) 12 Jan 2014

Monmouth Under 11s entertained local rivals Ross on Sunday 12th January. Both teams were grateful to Monmouth Comprehensive School for allowing the use of their pitches as the Chippenhamgate fields were still waterlogged.

Ross Junior section has only been established over the last five years, but has grown quickly. The Monmouth team showed its pedigree and strength in depth, however, by putting in a strong performance over the three periods of rugby played. Monmouth gave Ross five players for each of those periods, to make up the numbers to twelve-a-side, but the home side dominated from the off with strong performances from captain Rob Nixon, outside half Harry Johnson and centre Ollie Scrivens. Some good passing through the backs resulted in two tries for wing Harry Friend - a recent addition to the Monmouth club, like many of his teammates, playing against friends from schools in England. Matthew Arnell made a number of bullocking runs into the Ross defence, showing good power.

Two new lads, Harry Powell and Charlie Weldon made an instant impression on the Monmouth coaches; Charlie, having recently been playing rugby in Melbourne, showing composure and strength at fly half. All nineteen Monmouth players performed well, fifteen of them taking a turn for the opposition at various points of the morning. Ross were pleased with the competitive experience, and it was at their suggestion that the extra ten minutes was played.

Monmouth Man of the Match went to Kieran Williams.
