U12 v Ross (Home) 12 Jan 2014

82-5 Win

Monmouth U12s kicked off the New Year on a very chilly morning, against unfamiliar opponents, welcoming a large looking Ross R.F.C. team for the very first time. Monmouth, hoping for a morale boosting performance after coming close on so many occasions without success in the first half of the season, were led out by Henry Watkins, having the honour of captaining the team against many of his John Kyrle school chums – question was, would he hold the bragging rights come the first lesson on Monday morning?

The answer to the question was a resounding “YES” with Monmouth quickly establishing a three try lead within the first five minutes. Scoring 12 tries in total, six in each half, Monmouth ran out very easy winners against their relatively novice opponents, with Ross managing to score only one in response with the last play of the game. Whilst the heavier visitors pushed the home scrum all over the place, they did not gain sufficient possession to really threaten the try-line – Monmouth however were more clinical, scoring some fine individual and team tries.

It was great to see Josie Harrison and Aaron Hickman score their first ever tries for Monmouth in only their second games for the team. The 10 other tries were shared amongst Ben Pilot, Harry Williams, Josh Lewis and Cam Ogilvie; Brian Rowlands, Flynn Ruddiforth and Tom Davies all went very close without quite managing to touch-down, whilst Josh Bicknell got on the scoreboard with a conversion. Onwards and upwards then for this great squad, who keep battling away despite relatively low numbers – a welcome and well deserved result for all their hard work so far this season.

Final Score: Monmouth 82 – 5 Ross R.F.C.

Tries: Ben Pilot (4), Harry Williams (3), Josh Lewis (2), Cameron Ogilvie, Josie Harrison & Aaron Hickman
Conv: Ben Pilot (10), Josh Bicknell
