U11 v Ross (Home) 02 Mar 2014

45-15 Win

On Sunday 2nd March the Lions entertained Ross-on-Wye in what was a much needed, long over due match. Due to recent floods on the pitch there had been no rugby so everyone was eager to get back to it. Some of the parents came along early and the pitch was soon clear of debris from the recent storm.

Ross turned up with a disappointing 5 players. However, rather than cancel the game it was decided to lend them 5 players each half and both sides could get some much needed game time.

The Lions started strongly with the forwards on the front foot enabling quick ball to our backs where Oli Scriven was playing outside half and practically breaking through the Ross defence at will. Ever present, strong running Robbie Nixon added a new dimension to his game with his off loading and passing.

The first half of the game provided strong displays all over the park, but particularly from all Lions. Monmouth were very strong in attack - Dylan and Ellis on the wings provided some nice runs. Lewis Richards set up a fantastic try for Ellis Shepherd; ripping the ball off a forward and running 30yrds, he was scuppered in the tackle, just short of a try but offloaded it to Ellis showing great support which resulted in him diving over for the try. A mention must go to the Lions who played for Ross - they fought against a tide of attacking rugby. Strong defence was provided, but Harry Johnson, James Williams et al (Monmouth players for Ross) could not prevent the attacking Lions. Ross players appeared to insist on kicking any possession they had away to the Lions who happily ran it back at them.

First half score: 6 tries to 1

The second half saw a new set of 5 Monmouth players swapping sides to play for Ross, thus making sure everyone had a good run out. The Lions continued to attack but due to the team changes and the heavy pitch (which was now taking it out of the players) the game became a tighter affair with Ross finally managing to increase their side of the score sheet (albeit it was Monmouth players who were scoring and standing out above their Ross team mates...)

There were solid performances from all boys and it was good to see some - particularly Morgan Wainwright and James Williams coming back from injury and playing a full game.

Notable performances this week from Oli Scriven and Robbie Nixon

This game was much needed and thanks must go to Ross-on-Wye RFC for honouring the fixture, despite low numbers. Most sides would of just cancelled, however, the game was played in good spirits all kids enjoyed the much needed run out.

Final Score : 9 tries to 3 to Monmouth
