U12 v St. Julians (Home) 09 Mar 2014

33-29 Win

Monmouth U12s welcomed St. Julian’s from Newport on a glorious sunny spring morning and what a feast of exciting rugby ensued – a 10 try thriller, in an end-to-end match with the result decided ultimately by more successful conversions by the home team.

The visitors went ahead early on with a try out wide and quickly doubled their advantage, both tries went unconverted. The hosts struck back following a scrum close to the St. Julian’s line – a quick strike, a pick-up by Josh Lewis at scrum-half and a pop pass to outside-half Ben Pilot to exploit a huge gap – Pilot converted his own try. The visitors benefited from some poor play from the hosts to score a converted try on the stroke of half-time, to see Monmouth trailing at the break 7 – 17.

The second-half saw Monmouth explode into action, scoring four tries on the bounce to leave the visitors shell-shocked – flyer Josh Lewis out-paced the defence to score a trade-mark try; Josh Bicknell atoned for earlier errors to score from close quarters – both tries converted by Pilot saw the hosts in the lead for the first time. Rampaging Cam Ogilvie then broke desperate tackles to score and Harry Williams used his pace to easily touch-down under the posts – amazingly, Monmouth led 33-17 with five minutes to go.

And how Monmouth nearly contrived to chuck all their hard work away at the death – two soft tries, (one converted), conceded through some rather inept tackling, saw St. Julian’s threaten to steal the spoils – luckily the clock was in favour of the hosts and they managed to cling-on to secure a morale-boosting victory.

Tries: Ben Pilot, Josh Lewis, Josh Bicknell, Cameron Ogilvie & Harry Williams
Conversions: Ben Pilot (4)
