U11 v Caldicot (Away) 23 Mar 2014

55-15 Win

On a bright windy Sunday morning the Lions visited Caldicot in an earlier than normal kick off at the request of the home team. Earlier in the week, Caldicot had contacted us explaining they had low numbers and asked if they could borrow some if we had enough.

Was this a 'bluff' or were they struggling?.....

As it happens Caldicot turned up with 10 players. So with Monmouth 's 18 we equalled up the sides, giving all some game time. The coaches took the opportunity of trying players in different positions with the aim of strengthening our overall squad and giving new players the opportunity of a longer run out.

The game started strongly for Monmouth with the Lions showing good ball retention and width at every opportunity and identifying that Caldicot were simply following the ball leaving gaps out wide.

Strong performances from Matty Arnell, Angus Whitehead and Harry Powell in the forwards led to an abundance of ball for the backs to attack with which inturn saw Oli Scriven and Lewis Richards (both playing out of poistion on the wings) getting their fair share of the ball.

The second half brought more of the same but with a twist - Oli Scriven (Pontypool District center) and Robbie Nixon (team captain) agreed to play for Caldicot to balance the sides out and make more of a game of it. (Fearing it would be called off when we got to 10 tries as per the general rule)

There was more competition in the game but the result was never in doubt.

A special mention must go to the players who agreed to play for the opposition when asked and prolong the game. For players so young to understand the long term goal (ie to make the squad stronger) and happy to just be on the pitch and play is refreshing and takes me back to the reasons why we play each week. (A classic example of this was when a Caldicot player went down injured and rather than playing with less players our ever present hooker Kieron Williams ran onto the pitch to play for Caldicot wearing no jersey and just his body armour and muscles on show, immediately taking the ball up against monmouth.)

Man of the match was Harry Powell.

Tries from : Lewis, Morgan, Angus (2), Dylan, Oli Scrivens, Robbie, Harry Johnson (2), Ben, (Nearly Zav - good tackle oli)
