U12 v Caldicot (Away) 06 Apr 2014

A full complement of 15 players took part in the annual Caldicot tournament – thankfully, the forecast heavy rain held-off although the pitch was a mud-bath, patched-up with copious amounts of sand on the boggy parts – I swear I saw someone practicing their bunker shots from the sand between games!

Monmouth were very competitive in their first 3 games, all of which were very tight affairs against traditionally strong opponents – a fair effort by the boys and Josie, especially given the disjointed nature of our team, with many having to play in unfamiliar positions. All the other teams had the benefit of large squads and were thus able to rotate their players – Monmouth’s XV did not have the luxury of substitutes, so it was no surprise that they tired badly in their last game, conceding 4 tries with tournament hosts and eventual winners Caldicot benefiting greatly from frail tackling.

Byron Russell was pitched into the deep end, playing his first ever competitive rugby. Alastair McIntosh and Callum Lanfear made welcome returns with guest appearances. A special mention must go to Josh Lewis, who topped the tackle-count on the day – a great effort leading the defence.
