Druids v Pill Harriers (Home) 05 Apr 2014

41-12 Win

Pace behind Druids victory

Pill rfc were the latest opponents for the host club Monmouth Druids. The Druids squad was much different to that of the last game on the previous Tuesday. It contained youth and inexperienced players in key positions. The previous fixture between the two sides was a tense affair which Pill just edged.

The home side started the better but Pill had the opportunity to take the lead but their kicker missed the penalty kick. Druids wing Tom Gibson nearly opened the scoring but was held just short of the try line. It was evident that Pill were having the better of scrum as the home side was shunted back with regular frequency, making clean possession very difficult for the Druids.

It was the Druids who took the lead through a fine individual try from Outside Half Ludo Thomas. Receiving a pass from his scrum half, Thomas jinked his way over evading would be tacklers for a fine try. Full Back, Chris Gordon added the conversion to give the Druids a 7-0 lead.

Pill responded with a try of their own when their forwards drove hard up to the home try line. A strong charging run by one of the visitor’s forwards saw him crash over try line. The Outside half converted to bring the scores level.

Within minutes the home side regained the lead, again through another try set up by Scrum half Gareth Morgan. He used his pace to beat 2 or 3 defenders but was tackled short of the line. Hooker Ed White scooped up the ball to touch down. This try was not improved. Chris Gordon kicked a penalty goal to edge the Druids further ahead 15-7.

The lead was further extended with yet another individual effort from Ludo Thomas which was not improved.

Just before the interval the Druids scored their fourth try through Tom Gibson. Good handling and support play saw Gibson race in for the fifth try. Chris Gordon added the conversion to make the half time score 27-7.

Pill were not done and early in the second period, they succeeded in adding their seconded try following a lapse in the Druids defence. So 27-12, would Pill launch a comeback?

It was not to be as Gareth Morgan, gathered a ball from a lineout won by Jack Howells. He sped down the blind side and scorched over the Pill line. Chris Gordon converted.

To round off a cracking display, it was Gareth Morgan who set up the final try. From broken play, Morgan burst away from inside his own 20 metre area. With defenders desperately chasing him, when approaching the Pill line, he unselfishly fed Tom Gibson, who had tracked Morgan, and the winger touched down. Chris Gordon converted to make the final score 41-12 in favour of the Druids.

The speed and trickery of the Druids half backs, Thomas and Morgan, the kicking of Chris Gordon and the doggedness of the forwards earned the victory.
