Druids v Caldicot (home) 07 Feb 2015

20-10 Win

Druids rally for fine Win

Monmouth Druids faced Caldicot RFC on the Sports Ground knowing that they must gain a victory to sustain their league challenge which was boosted by last weeks success.

Both sides had large squads, every man bracing themselves against the cold playing conditions. Prop Paul King led the Druids whose squad this week which lacked the number of Youth players that graced the team in last weeks win.
Caldicot had the better of the play largely through the strength of their scrumage which had the effect of pushing back the Druids in this phase of play. The monopoly of the play by the visitors took its toll when they scored a try following a Druids error. Desperately defending, a home forward gave a poor pass which did not go to hand. Caldicot gathered the ball to score a try. The try was converted to give Caldicot a 7-0 lead.

The Druids looked threatening when Outside Half Jordan Howells broke on the blind side. He fed Left Wing Karl Pearce who was stopped after a stirring run. The home side had the opportunity to get on the scoreboard but a 30 metre penalty attempt hit the crossbar.

Caldicot kicked a penalty goal to stretch their lead to give them a 10-0 lead which coupled with their dominance deserved the lead. Could the Druids pull back this deficit?

Just before the interval the Druids began the fight back. From broken play in the Caldicot 22 Metre area Jordan Howells put in a powerful burst, broke a tackle and dived over wide out. The kick failed but Druids were on their way as the whistle blew.

Both sides made substitutions, the Druids particularly, hoping to break Caldicot dominance.

The second half saw Jordan Howells individual contribution decisive as he was even more prominent in the play for the Druids. Strong surging runs by Howells, supported by other Druids players caused panic in the visitors ranks.

From one such run, supported by Wing Nathan Cocker, allowed Howells to cross the try line close to the corner flag to bring the scores level at ten points each. The Druids held the upper hand now and only last gasp tackling by Caldicot kept the scores level.

Predictably the home side took the lead again following a break by Jordan Howells. He drew the Caldicot full back after another run, fed Nathan Cocker who dived under the posts. Howells converted to stretch the lead to 17-10.

Howells was not finished when he kicked a penalty to make the final score 20-10. No bonus point for a fourth try but a fine victory, coming back from a ten point deficit. Paul King led the side well, whilst Hooker Ben Goldengay battled hard at the scrums.

At the lineout Dan Ansty caught good ball and Lee Foxwell was prominent at the breakdown. In the first half Centre Aaron Price and full back Kris Gordan tackled and defended well. Last but not least Scrum Half Kyle Price tidied up well and did not shirk anything. Substitute Mitch Gleed made an impact in a great comeback victory. Caldicot were a well organised team that tackled bravely.
