Druids v Garndiffaith (away) 21 Feb 2015

Seven try lesson by Druids

Monmouth Druids travelled to Garndiffaith RFC seeking to build on their winning run which makes them the form side in the league. It was before last XMAS that they suffered their last defeat and this week they were seeking their fourth successive victory.

On arrival, the Druids were informed that Garndiffaith could not field two regular Prop Forwards and therefore unopposed scrums would have to take place. The Druids were not too disappointed by this news as their squad was stronger in numbers in the threequarters than the pack.

Centre Dave Brace led the side which began brightly for the visitors. Following a move which crossed the pitch and a return, Wing Kurt Pearce almost scored in the corner. It was not long before the Druids did score after strong running behind the scrum. An attempted Garndiffaith relieving kick was charged down and Hooker Ben Goldengay dived on the ball to score a try which Full Back Kris Gordon converted.

Druids dominance created another try following a break down the blind side of a scrum. Flanker Matt King fed Dave Brace who drew the opposition full back and passed to Scrum Half Gareth Morgan who race over to make the score 12-0.

Morgan piled on the misery when from a ruck close to the home try line he broke a tackle to touch down to make the score 17-0.

Garndiffaith missed an opportunity to reduce the deficit by missing a penalty shot and the visitors replied with their fourth try to gain a bonus point in the league. Scrum Half Morgan gathered from broken play to put Wing Nathan Cocker over wide out to stretch the lead to 22-0.

A Druids player gained a Yellow Card which reduced their ranks to fourteen. Garndiffaith took advantage of their numerical advantage by scoring a try after a missed tackle by a Druids defender.

Just before the interval the Druids added to their lead when from a series of rucks, Kyle Price sneaked over in the corner for their fifth try Kris Gordon improved.

Quite early in the second period, a Garndiffaith Centre injured his shoulder and lower arm after a tackle and was forced to leave the field giving the home side further problems.

Druids were on a rampage now and from a flowing three quarter move Right Wing Kurt Pearce finished of the play by diving over for the sixth try. To wrap up an emphatic victory Gareth Morgan scored his third and the Druids seventh try which Kris Gordan converted for a 41-5 win.

Man of the match was of course Gareth Morgan not only from his try count but from his general play which was full of darting runs that the home side found difficulty in coping with. Jack Howells and Mitch Gleed won their lineout ball and the back line were threatening.
