U13 v Bromyard (away) 21 Feb 2016

50-7 Win

Monmouth u'13s (lions) travelled to Bromyard on a very rare Sunday morning without rain. With this being only the 2nd time the Lions have played since Christmas, and playing English rules it was important we turned up with a strong squad and start strong.

The Lions flew out of the gate putting loads of pressure on the Bromyard defence with countless scrums which finally paid off with n.8 Jamie Stracken using his size and pace to smash his way over the line in the corner. The lions forwards were doing well against a bigger and heavier pack which meant Charlie Weldon at 10 getting loads of ball to try and unlock the Bromyard defence, Charlie being Charlie lapped this up using every opportunity to spread the ball through hands or put frequent switches in with our strong running center Xav Turner. This style of play brought rewards with the Lions going into half time 21-0 up.

The second half saw our forwards decide that the game was already won and Bromyard sensing this, came back at us with a quick try of there own. This, and a few harsh words off the coaches woke the forwards up and normal practise resumed.

Angus Whitehead looked very strong on the wing, grabbing 2 x tries and being very unlucky not to get a third, Johnny Pearce always looked dangerous at center grabbing a brace of tries showing his blinding pace and Charlie Weldon capped a fine display kicking all conversions except two and also scoring a try.

As with most big wins, it starts up front though and a big shout out must go to the forwards who dug in and convincingly won the forward battle. Huge performances off Ben Pask for his workrate around the park, doubling his match day tackle count compared to before xmas and our Man of Match - Harry Powell, who even though only flew back into the uk in the early hours managed never to be more than 5yrds away from the ball at any time and tackled himself out.

Tries: Jamie Stracken (3), Johnathan Pearce, Charlie Weldon, Angus Whitehead (2), Woody Shaw
