U13 v Caerphilly (away) 19 Sep 2015

20-25 Loss

To start the season 2015-16 off the Lions traveled to Caerphilly this weekend. We started the game strongly with new no.8 Jamie Strachen sprinting over from picking up at the base of the scrum showing the opposition a clean pair of heels due to the several yards of pace he discovered after a summer of training. Caerphilly then started to come into the game with a good driving line-out and solid scrum, this paved the way for them to grab a try back but with excellent work at the breakdown by Harry Powell and Xavier Brevet throughout the first half and some strong running and defensive work from centre Che Theaker we saw Monmouth Lions go into the half time break 3 tries to 1 up.

Half time saw all the lions subs used as the coaches decided to try out the new boys and forge new combinations, Caerphilly saw this as their opportunity and upped the pressure in the forwards and through good forward play and persistent pressure on the monmouth set piece found 4 second half tries to see Caerphilly come out winners 5 tries to 4.
This was, Caerphilly's 3rd game of the season and Monmouth's first, even though the boys were gutted they lost the coaches were upbeat with all new boys performing well and fitting into the new squad. With new players Woody Shaw, Oli Parks, Ewan Telling And Daniel Taylor all having good 1st games.

Looking back at the game, the lions could of won but the coaches were clear in their goal of building a very good squad and not just a good 15. With regards to the older 'lions' they continued where they left off last season all with strong performances making selection more and more competitive.

Man of match went to Che Theaker who had his best match so far with huge hits and strong running.

Tries: Jamie Strachen (2), Jonathan Pearce, Che Theaker
